Our assignment this week was to gather some field recordings and use them create a musical composition.
I continue to be fascinated with the "unheard" or "hidden" frequencies of everyday objects, so I used my contact mic to record different noises in my apartment: closet doors, creaking bathroom doors, drawers, AC unit, refrigerator, microwave, toilet, coffee grinder, and water boiler.
I started playing around with these noises and tried to create a composition that had some sort of build-up. I used the recording of the water boiler as the foundation for the composition, since it has a slow and gradual build-up, and I clipped and edited the rest of the sounds around this build-up.
Afterwards I applied different effects and filters to the different recordings, to see what kinds of sounds were produced.
In the end, it turned out to be an abstract industrial/sci-fi/electronic composition. You can tell that most of the sounds are machines, but at times it also sounds like there might be a creature lurking here or there. The composition was created using Ableton Live.
